Your Must-Have Guide to Wedding Venues in The Southern Highlands

A picturesque hideaway in New South Wales, The Southern Highlands is a dream location to tie the knot with some incredible wedding venues.

Let’s begin by saying, congratulations! You’re getting married! And if you’re looking for wedding venues in The Southern Highlands, I bet you’re at the very start of your wedding planning journey, what an exciting time! Booking your venue is the very first step most newly-weds take when organising their big day, as it affects so many other elements that need to be organised. As South Coast wedding videographers, I have had the pleasure of capturing many weddings in the Southern Highlands, and I can tell you that you’ve chosen a wonderful place to say ‘I Do’.

When you start to research venues, it can soon feel a little overwhelming. With so many choices, where to start? Well, today, I thought I would share my 15 favourite wedding venues in The Southern Highlands, a shortlist of stunning locations that you should definitely book a viewing of.

Essential Information About Weddings in The Southern Highlands

Where is it located?

In between Sydney and Canberra, The Southern Highlands is a uniquely beautiful region within New South Wales. A charming collection of small towns and villages are situated within its borders, each with their own personality and style.

How Much Do Weddings Cost in The Southern Highlands

Cost is often down to the wants and needs of the couple, but on average wedding venues in The Southern Highlands would charge upward of $150 per head. During peak season (October-March), the venues would require a minimum spend of $20,000. But, if you’re looking for a bargain or hoping to miss the Australian summer and don’t mind tying the knot out of season, venues will often have special deals on winter weddings.

What is the Accommodation Like in the Area?

In the towns of Bowral, Mittagong, Berrima, Bundanoon, Robertson and Moss Vale there are plenty of pretty hotels, motels, B&B’s and Air BNB’s available. With so many options in the surrounding towns, your out-of-town wedding guests will be spoilt for choice!

What is the Weather Like on Average?

If you’re dreaming of an outdoor wedding in the sun, the very warmest months in The Southern Highlands are January, February and December. As a wedding videographer in New South Wales, I’ve experienced this first-hand with Summer in The Southern Highlands being cooler than the South Coast (average temperatures from 15 to the mid-20s Celsius) often up to 10 degrees cooler. It even snows occasionally (imagine those wedding images) with Winter temperatures typically in the high teens down to freezing.

How to Choose the Best Wedding Videographer

Choosing a great wedding videographer will guarantee that every little detail you meticulously planned for your special day will be captured forever. From that breathtaking moment, you glide down the aisle in your gorgeous gown to the cutting of your three-tier wedding cake to the moment your auntie Trina rhythmically enters the dance floor after one too many glasses of Prosecco! All of these moments (even the last one) deserve to be caught on camera and in a style that represents you.

Most couples do not have much experience when it comes to finding the best wedding videographer and it can be a daunting prospect. How much should you budget? How long does the process take? What style of wedding film do you want? These are all valid questions and any good wedding videographer on the South Coast, for example, would be able to easily answer your queries from the first meeting.

We thought we would fast track your quest to finding your dream wedding videographer by sharing our advice and tips, so you’re in the know before you even book your first appointment.

Wedding at Terara with bride and groom on the river

Start with your wedding venue

This is wedding planning 101, and it applies to every supplier you are looking to book. Before you start lusting over lace or getting giddy with ganache, book your wedding venue. It’s your baseline, as the availability of your venue will affect every other supplier and its location/type may bring extra travel costs.

Do Your Research

Sit down early in your wedding planning and take the time to look at all the talented filmmakers in your area. If you’re in NSW, search for wedding videographers in the Southern Highlands and look through each of their sites. Most of them will have their cinematography packages available to view online, which will give you a good idea of pricing – but don’t stop there! Look through all the other information they provide, including their about page. Just because X wedding videographer is cheaper than Y doesn’t mean that X is right for you, get a feel for their personality and make sure you’re a good match. Besides that, look at what else they offer. Do they have a team? How many hours of footage do they take and provide? Do they have drones? What are their testimonials like? Do you like their videos?! All of these points will help you decide whether they are worth putting into your ‘get in touch’ column.

Find Your Style

Just like photographers, wedding videographers take different approaches to their craft. Candid/documentary-style wedding videos present the events chronologically, without many special effects, while a cinematic film is generally more dramatic, using interesting angles for a Hollywood style production. These are just two options, there are many others and actually you may find you want elements of all of them in your film in order to represent your big day. Maybe a cool music video style shoot for the evening and a relaxed minimalist approach to the day time. It’s your movie and you’re in charge!

Go Old School & Meet Your Wedding Videographer in Person

As we said, there is a lot you can learn from a Google search of wedding videographers in the Southern Highlands, South Coast, and Hunter Valley but to truly know if your chosen supplier is right for you, you need a face to face. In your first meeting bring along as much information about your big day as possible, along with the things that are non-negotiable in your wedding videography package. For example, you may be willing to forgo the filming of that epic dance routine you’ve been planning for months if your videographer captures some amazing drone footage of your venue. Besides the hashing out of the final details, your first meeting in person will also tell you if you like them or not! This is really important as he/she/they will possibly be present throughout your special day, so you will want to feel comfortable and relaxed around them. A good wedding videographer will go unnoticed and blend into the scenery, but however good they are, if you don’t like them you’ll know they’re there! So make sure it’s a good match from the off.

Look Out for Warning Signs

As with any major purchase, check the T&C’s (no, actually check them this time!) and the professionalism of the service. If they don’t have clear terms and seem a little dodgy – maybe steer clear. Choosing a wedding videographer based on price will not always get you the results you’re looking for. Also, find out if they are a photographer and videographer combination. The last thing you want is someone juggling equipment in the background of your wedding all day! Ideally, you want a separate photographer and wedding videographer who can seamlessly work in tandem together.

Capture the Sounds not Just the Sights of your Wedding

One of the obvious, but sometimes overlooked advantages of wedding videography is that you have sound! You can relive your heartfelt vows, hear the little interactions between bride and bridesmaid on your wedding morning and listen back to your Dad’s awful jokes during his reception speech, forever. These magical moments deserve to be captured, and they will give your wedding film another level of narrative. So don’t be shy in asking if your videographer has the right audio equipment to capture the moments you want to be remembered. Also, it’s a good idea to introduce your DJ to your videographer before the big day, so they can coordinate all the necessary audio plug-ins.

A Wedding Videographer Needs Post Production Time

If a wedding videographer says that they can deliver your film back to you a couple of days after your wedding, move them into the red flag column. Post-production is as much an art as the actual filming itself, and it takes time. Your wedding video deserves to be nurtured by a professional who cares deeply about their finished product. Someone who is experienced in extracting those precious moments from hours of footage, in order to present you with a visual representation of your special day, just as you remembered, possibly better! To find out how long they will take to produce your film in advance, and agree on a timescale that is right for both of you. Good things come to those who wait!

6 Reasons why you’ll love your wedding film online vs a USB flash drive.

Its 2021 and delivery of your wedding films should be instantaneous. With so many options available including Vimeo, dropbox and google drive, there isn’t any reason why you should accept a USB flash drive when considering a wedding videographer.

Editing a wedding film can be a highly involved and creative process. A good wedding film should take time. Once your wedding film is completed, the fastest and most efficient way for you to receive your wedding film is by digital download. No need to wait for your movie to be transferred to a USB flash drive, be packaged and boxed and labelled and dropped off at the post office. On top of that, there will be at least a few extra days to wait for delivery.
With a digital download, The very second your film is uploaded it’s also available for download just like that.

The rough Cut

Do any changes need to be made to your wedding films before they are sent? With a digital download, your videographer can easily upload a rough cut for you to watch and make any tweaks. This is something that is just not possible with a USB flash drive.

Freedom to share

Not only can you instantly download your wedding film via the private link, but you can also share the link with family all over the globe—no need to make copies of your USB flash drives and post to loved ones.

Your social media

If you wish to share your wedding films over Facebook and Instagram, a digital download is ideal. It’s not even necessary to download your wedding film, simply share the link provided for all your friends and family to check out your amazing wedding video.

Environmental footprint

Consider the amount of packaging waste associated with a physical USB flash drive. Disposal of the new flash drive packaging, original gift box packing and bubble wrap from the supplier, repacking of the gift box, and a plastic postage satchel. With a digital download, no packaging is needed, helping everyone make better choices for the planet.

Lost or damaged wedding films

We have had couples contact us years later and explain they have lost their wedding films, as you can imagine it’s just not possible to keep a copy of every wedding film ever made on our workstation.
A digital download solves by making your film available for download on all your devices including phones, notebooks, desktops and your external hard drive. Should you somehow still lose a copy of your wedding films, all you need to do is download a new copy, even years later.

11 Reasons Why You Need A Wedding Videographer

If you’re still not sold on the idea, scroll down and find out why hiring a wedding videographer will be the best big day planning decision you’ll ever make

Getting married is a massive milestone. And your wedding is one of the few times you’ll get to dedicate a whole day to the celebration of your love for each other, and experience some extraordinary moments surrounded by your dearest friends and family. Capturing these ‘once in a lifetime’ moments on film will mean they’re never lost and can be re-lived time and time again, and that’s why it makes sense to work with a wedding videographer.

These days modern wedding films are more than just a simple recording of a wedding day. Today’s wedding films are engaging, emotional, and inspiring ensembles that bring together creative editing, wedding cinematography, music and professional sound design.

A modern wedding videographer uses colour and tone to enhance a film’s feeling and overall presentation. Sound a little complex? Yes, it certainly can be. This is one of the main reasons why we refer to them as wedding films and not just simple wedding videos.

Why You Should Hire a Wedding Videographer for Your Big Day

1. You Can Trust Your Videographer

Don’t think of your videographer as somebody who simply shows up, films your wedding and passes on a movie a few weeks later. Instead, understand that your wedding videographer is passionate about helping you capture those joyous, crazy, and heartfelt one-of-a-kind moments that you can never relive.

Your videographer is someone who can anticipate all those special moments, understand how to capture them & showcase your enjoyment, naturally. Long before your wedding day arrives, your videographer will be there to offer suggestions, answer questions and provide support.

2. Capturing Memories for Everyone, Even for Those Who Can’t Attend

Unfortunately it’s not always possible for everyone to attend your wedding. But by hiring a wedding videographer you’ll be gifted with a unique memento that can be forever shared, copied, gifted and shared again to all of those that couldn’t be there on the day.

One of the best things about having a professional wedding film is that you can present it to those who were unable to attend, helping them to experience your wedding day in all of its excitement, joy and laughter. By forever capturing these moments, every person who watches your wedding film will wholly experience what it was like to be part of your special day. It’s not the same as being there, but it’s the next best thing.

3. Our Memories Fade

How well do you remember life’s important milestones? Even the most special memories become a little fuzzy as time goes by. Imagine being able to watch your wedding film in two, five or even 20 years time, you’ll be amazed by how things have changed and the memories will come flooding back.

4. Technology

Modern wedding videographers use digital motion cinema cameras that are about the size of a grapefruit. This helps videographers blend in to your wedding party seamlessly, most of the time you’ll forget they are even there! Aerial drones can also be utilized during your wedding day and help to provide scenic context as part of your wedding film. These Aerial drones capture dynamic, illustrative and breath-taking videos, offering a unique and grand perspective of the beautiful location you’ve chosen for your wedding day. Being able to see your wedding from the air is something extraordinary.

5. An Investment for the Future.

You might not be at that stage yet, but imagine being able to show your children and grandchildren what your wedding day was like. That will be pretty special! Unfortunately, those who came long before you most likely didn’t have the option of working with a wedding videographer, but you certainly do!

Your wedding film will become a cherished family heirloom in the future, a rare and treasured piece of your past.

6. More Affordable, Than You Might Think

Weddings can be expensive, there’s no denying that, but how often do you get to spend a whole day with all the most important people in your life, celebrate your love, togetherness and the brand-new chapter you’re embarking on? When you consider the opportunity to fully relive your special day over and over again, booking a wedding videographer starts to make a lot of sense.

Once your wedding day has come and gone, what are you left with? Your guests probably won’t remember the floral arrangements, your celebrant’s words or what colour suits the groomsmen wore. With a professional wedding film they will be able to reminisce the interactions they shared, the fun, the tears and most importantly, the fabulous memories. These moments are so unique, and they are all that we have, they make up our whole existence and shape our lives. How could anyone possibly put a price on capturing one of the most memorable days of their lives?

7. You’ll Miss Moments, but Your Wedding Videographer Won’t

I bet you have heard married couples say, “I can’t believe it went so fast” or “our wedding day just flew by” Unfortunately this is pretty common. With so much going on, you’ll likely miss many of the beautiful moments throughout your big day.

You’ll miss the nervous excitement as your partner gets ready before the ceremony, your bridesmaids holding back tears of joy as you read your vows or that adorable moment as your flower girl enters the reception for the first time. Even though your wedding day might feel like it just flew by, a professional wedding videographer is experienced in capturing all those moments, ensuring those beautiful memories aren’t lost forever.

8. Photos Can’t Capture Sound and Motion

Photos are essential, but they don’t tell the whole story, paint the full picture or move you with emotion as video can. As the years go by and our memories become a little hazy, photos can often become subjective. Unlike photographs, video and sound reminds us of precisely what we were doing, saying and feeling during that particular moment.

When we watch a wedding film, there’s audio, so you’ll be able to hear all the laughter, jokes, music, cheers of excitement and tears of joy. It’s the way people move, the way our eyes connect, our body language that shows love, fondness and all those subtle emotions that photographs just can’t replicate.

9. So Many Options

In the past, wedding videos had a bit of a bad stigma attached and probably rightly so. They were pretty bland, shaky and usually didn’t do the couple any justice. Nowadays, wedding films are nothing like the average offering that came before. They are vibrant, fun, emotional, stylized and personalized. Modern wedding videographers are cinematographers, producers, colourists, drone pilots, sound technicians and editors all rolled into one. This allows professional wedding videographers to craft wedding films that meet a massive range of styles and options.

A wedding highlights film is an essential inclusion when choosing a wedding videography package. Your highlights film is most likely the film you will watch the most, gift to guests who couldn’t make it on the day and share with family and friends via social media.

Other fantastic options should include:

  • An Instagram edit. A short compact edit that can be shared on Instagram
  • A short highlights film perfect for Facebook
  • A medium/long highlights edit. Perfect for sharing on Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo
  • A feature film (20 minutes plus) Perfect for sharing on YouTube and Vimeo.

10. Creating an Amazing Wedding Film

There are many fantastic wedding videographers out there, but before you make your decision, check out their website and Facebook page for all the vital info. Don’t just look for the cheapest option, choose someone who makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Choose a videographer who is willing to work with you, rather than dictate. Look for a wedding videographer whose films you can connect with.

Do you love the colour, the feel and the flow of the film? Does the film resonate with you and engage you? Do they have a Google business page? Do they respond promptly to your emails? If your answer is no to any of these questions, that may be a red flag. Your videographer should be keen to chat with you over the phone or via a zoom/video call before you have even met or signed any contracts.

11. A Much Different Experience than You Might Think

It’s not uncommon for some couples to feel a little uneasy about being filmed during their wedding day. They envision cheesy posing, bright lights and a camera shoved in their face. Choosing the right videographer however, can be a very natural and organic experience as they will shoot from a distance and go with the flow of the day rather than stage fake scenes. Blending in as if one of your guests, a good wedding videographer may go almost entirely unnoticed during your wedding day.
